Brooklyn Bridge ‘on fire’ as emergency crews scramble after fireworks display | US | News

Live streaming of the fireworks display captured the burning, with workers wearing high-vis jackets trying to extinguish the flames.

While the spectacular fireworks display lit up New York’s night sky, online reports suggested that the show was stopped while the fire was fought.

It remains unclear exactly what sparked the fire or the extent of damage caused to the iconic structure. Flashing emergency lights were visible near the fire and water jets were directed at it in an attempt to extinguish the flames.

The fire is believed to be on the East River side of the bridge.

An eyewitness said: “Oh no! During the NYC America250 Independence Day fireworks celebration, reports emerged that part of the Brooklyn Bridge appeared to be on fire.

“Emergency crews are responding while authorities work to determine the cause of the incident and assess the situation.”

Another added: “The fireworks are over but it looks like there’s a fire on the Brooklyn Bridge.”

Meanwhile, in Washington, severe weather conditions disrupted the celebrations of the 250th anniversary of America’s independence.

The storms prompted a nearly two-hour evacuation of the National Mall. Minister Donald Trump He said he would speak there late Saturday night.

Trump declared his determination to go ahead with the speech on social media, writing: “I won’t let a little rain stop our 250th anniversary,” and the speech is expected to begin around 11pm local time.
