Burger chain accused of misleading customers over Tree Day Tuesday donations
The competition watchdog is suing Grill’d for allegedly misleading customers about donating $1 for every burger purchased on “Tree Day Tuesday” for several years.
Grill’d ran a three-year campaign claiming to donate $1 for every burger purchased on Tuesdays towards tree planting.
But the terms and conditions, which required orders to be placed by Grill’d loyalty members by scanning a separate barcode at the front counter for in-store dining, were so complex that only 4 percent qualified to donate.
ACCC chair Gina Cass-Gottlieb said: “We allege that Grill misled customers by exaggerating the size of its donations and the environmental impact of its Tree Day Tuesday promotion. We view this as a form of greenwashing.”
“In fact, only a small percentage of purchases made on Tuesdays were eligible to be forgiven by Grill’d due to the detailed terms of the promotion, which we told customers were not disclosed or adequately explained.”
More to come.
