Conservative candidate aims to replace Andy Burnham as mayor of Greater Manchester

The Conservative Party announced Trafford councilor Phil Eckersley as its candidate for the next Greater Manchester mayor on Sunday.

The local businessman is confirmed to be a candidate on Sunday and will face Manchester City Council leader Bev Craig of the Labor Party, as well as the Green Party’s Geraldine Coggins, who is also a Trafford councillor.

Labor pitched this as a two-party race against Reform England, which made huge gains in the region during the local elections.

However, the Greens are also aiming to get votes from the Labor Party, following their success in the Gorton and Denton by-elections.

MP Rupert Lowe said the Restore party would be the candidate. Reform has not yet announced its mayoral candidate.

The mayoral by-election will be held on July 30 and Mr Eckersley, who represents Trafford Council’s Bowdon Ward, said he was “honoured to have been chosen”.

Mr Eckersley, who founded Bridgewater Care Home in Wigan in 2010, which employs more than 100 people, added: “Greater Manchester is my home and an area of enormous potential, but too often decisions are made with a focus on Manchester city centre, leaving the outer boroughs left behind.

“As a business owner, father and local councillor, I understand the challenges faced by families, businesses and communities in our city region.

“From pressure on public services and concerns about crime and antisocial behavior to traffic congestion and the need for housing and stronger local economies, these are issues I have addressed head on throughout my professional and public life.

“The Conservative Party has a clear vision for Greater Manchester: safer streets, better transport, thriving local businesses, responsible development and value for taxpayers’ money.”

Ed Davey says Burnham has ‘a very clear window’ to turn Labor’s fortunes around

Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey warned that Andy Burnham “has a very short period of time to turn this government around” as the country is “impatient for change”.

“People have heard this kind of talk before but they are sorely disappointed because nothing is changing – Burnham should not repeat this mistake,” he said.

“If he is serious about boosting growth and reducing the cost of living, Burnham must scrap Labour’s old red lines on Europe and bring Britain into the single market.

“We will hold their feet to the fire to finally deliver the change people are crying out for.”
