Bury: Motorist shot by police after ‘driving directly at officers’ in bid to evade arrest

A driver trying to evade arrest was shot by police after driving directly into officers.

Greater Manchester Police said officers attempted to stop a vehicle on Bury New Road in Whitefield, Bury, at 3pm on Friday.

Police added that “the car did not stop and drove directly at our officers in an attempt to escape” and was opened fire by a firearms officer.

The driver of the car, who was injured in his arm, was taken to the hospital.

It was described as neither life-threatening nor life-altering. Police reported that no police officer was injured in the incident and the investigation is ongoing.

GMP said the incident was referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct “in accordance with standard procedure”.

A 20-year-old white British man was arrested on suspicion of supplying class A drugs.

Detective Superintendent Joe Harrop, from GMP’s serious crime division, said: “We know people in the area will be concerned about what is happening and the visible increase in police officers in the local area as our investigations continue.

“Thankfully no members of the public or officers were harmed in this afternoon’s incident and we thank people for their patience while we remained at the scene.

“If anyone has any concerns please speak to our officers in the local area – they are there to listen and assist where possible.”
