Business Council’s copyright proposal to let AI train without paying

Attorney General Michelle Rowland in one of the final weeks of parliament last year declared Albania’s government has “rejected” a change to copyright law that would have allowed tech companies to train AI on Australian creative works, such as books or articles, without permission or payment to the creator.

Undeterred, Australia’s powerful business lobby came up with a new way to let big tech use such work to train its AI – bypassing the copyright system entirely – and then quietly shelved the plans.
