Caitlin Clark shoved in neck during Fever game as another apparent foul on star goes uncalled

Indiana Fever superstar Caitlin Clark returned to the court Wednesday night in Indianapolis, and as we’ve seen in the past, the referees weren’t on her side despite flagrant fouls that could be classified as a cheap shot.

After a hot start to the game against the Phoenix Mercury, Clark lost his balance in the painted area while heading towards the basket. Three different Mercury players tried to take the ball away from him and succeeded.

However, Alyssa Thomas had some extracurricular activities with Clark; he shoved him first into the quarterback’s neck and then stomped him to the ground. This came as the ball was moving away from the paint.

Thomas then ran over Clark on the hardwood before joining his Mercury teammates in transition.

While the video replay shows all this, no foul was called despite the referee clearly standing on the baseline. As a result, social media was stunned and many people shared their dissatisfaction with the game.

“What are we doing here? A brutally cheap shot,” Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy tweeted. “These women would still be flying commercials if it weren’t for Caitlin and she’s being treated like this. Crazy.”

Clark is no stranger to playing very physical, and more importantly, no fouls are being called right now.

Meanwhile, the WNBA continues to review the technical foul Clark received in Monday’s game against the Mercury. Authorities evaluated the “clapping and provoking” technique during a viral series. Four other players also received technical fouls: Fever teammates Sophie Cunningham and Myisha Hines-Allen, and Mercury players Alyssa Thomas and DeWanna Bonner. Thomas and Hines-Allen were later given second technical fouls and were ejected from the game.

Although Dallas Wings star guard Paige Bueckers had her technical assignment revoked for a similar ovation earlier this season, it’s possible the league is still mulling over the “provocative” part of the viral controversy, as Clark’s action ultimately led to the confrontation.

Either way, this clear move by Thomas while Clark was defenseless on the field did not warrant even the slightest whistle, and the game continued.

Clark had to leave the game in the third quarter due to a back injury. He finished the match with 19 points and 8 assists.
