Calcutta HC again denies urgent hearing of Abhishek Banerjee’s plea to travel abroad

The Kolkata High Court, for the second time on Monday, June 29, 2026, rejected Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee’s plea for urgent hearing of a petition filed by him seeking relaxation of an earlier order banning him from going abroad for treatment.

Mr Banerjee had sought an expedited hearing of his appeal seeking relaxation of the May 22 order to allow him to receive special treatment abroad for his eye, which was badly affected in a 2016 road accident.

However, the request for urgent hearing of the petition was previously rejected by the single court bench Saugata Bhattacharya on June 25, 2026.

According to officials, Mr. Banerjee had sought permission for a seven-day visit outside India for treatment. However, the court maintained that this treatment could be done in the country and observed that there was no need to hear the petition urgently, considering the large number of cases already pending against the TMC leader.

The petition arises from a criminal case filed against Diamond Harbor MP by one Rajib Sarkar for allegedly making derogatory remarks against Union Home Hinister Amit Shah at an election rally.

On May 22, he applied to the court to be released on bail in the case after the court instructed him to cooperate with the investigation agency and not to travel abroad.
