Calicut varsity plans Centre of Excellence in AI

Calicut University is planning to set up a Center of Excellence (CoE) in Artificial Intelligence (AI) at its main campus at Tenhipalam in Malappuram district.

A purposeful proposal submitted by Vice-Chancellor (VC) P. Raveendran was approved at the university’s Union meeting held on Saturday, March 1, 2026. According to the Union members who attended the meeting, the center will offer students education and research opportunities at international standards. The university will launch new and advanced courses for this.

Sources said that the center will be facilitated in the university’s new building complex. Mr Raveendran told the meeting that the centre’s plan would be prepared after consulting artificial intelligence experts in India and abroad. Highly qualified teachers and high-level infrastructure will be provided. He added that the center will also increase job opportunities for students.

Meanwhile, the university has established a Union subcommittee to establish a framework of rules for international academic collaborations. The possibilities of twinning academic programs (in which students split their courses between a local institution and a foreign university and eventually receive the degree from the latter) and joint and double degree programs will be explored. The aim is to control the migration of students to other countries and improve the university’s ranking by the National Institutional Ranking Framework and the National Assessment and Accreditation Council.
