California Gov. Gavin Newsom backs social media age limits bill for teens

California Gov. Gavin Newsom joined the fight Thursday over social media age limits for children under 16, saying “this is long overdue.”
Newsom shared his thoughts on the subject at a press conference regarding public transportation in the Bay Area.
He shared his own experience as a father and recalled a recent incident when he encountered his daughter and her friends at a birthday party.
“I literally stopped everyone because there were seven people together at the birthday party talking on their cell phones, none of them talking to each other,” Newsom told reporters.

Seven members of the California State Assembly introduced a proposal. bipartisan bill This month, the minimum age requirement for “opening or maintaining a social media account” will be determined.
“We’re long overdue to have the discussion that we’re having in the legislature right now, and I’m very grateful that the legislature is taking this very seriously,” Newsom said.
The cut-off age is not clarified in the bill.
The bill cites pre-existing laws that “impose a variety of requirements on social media platforms,” including things like requiring platforms to publish terms of service, “disclosing threat reporting procedures, and maintaining a process of communication with law enforcement.”

Newsom also said he recently met with leaders at the Munich Security Conference and the World Economic Forum in Switzerland about social media.
Newsom said, “I was abroad to meet with Spanish Prime Minister Sanchez, who is moving in this direction. We had a direct meeting on this issue. I also met with the Deputy Prime Minister of Australia.”
“This is something that I am very grateful that we are discussing and pursuing at the state level,” Newsom continued.
Newsom later confirmed this Policy He said he wants state legislation that would restrict access to online platforms for individuals under 16.
Newsom spokeswoman Tara Gallegos said the governor supports “age restriction rules” inspired by rules enacted in Australia.

“As parents, we need help,” Newsom said Thursday. “We have a generation that has never been more anxious, less free, more stressed, and we have to address this.”
Newsom’s office and the White House did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.
