Call For Immediate Steps To Curb Uranium Contamination

Kakinada: Environmentalist and Jana Sena general secretary Bolisetty Satyanarayana has urged the state and central governments to reduce uranium pollution in Andhra Pradesh in light of the central Ground Water Board 2025 report.
Satyanarayana said that the leakage started from YSR Kadapa district and spread to five districts of Andhra Pradesh. The spread could reach other parts of the state and lead to groundwater contamination, he said.
He called for urgent steps to control pollution, an issue he has been fighting against for the last five years. “There is no protective layer (bentonite lining) underneath the Tummalapalle Uranium tailings pond which allows tailings to seep directly into the groundwater,” he said.
According to him, uranium pollution was causing jaw tumors in women, the spread of skin diseases and the death of animals. In 2021, even after showing how uranium waste was washed away during floods, the AP Pollution Control Board did not respond.
The JS leader demanded that the APPCB immediately focus on the Tummalapalle tailings pond and take steps to prevent further spread of pollution. He said around 16 villages affected by pollution should be identified as hotspots and the affected people should be moved to safer areas and provided with livelihood, education and health services.
He offered to lead government steps to prevent pollution.
