Cameron vs Kotaskova: Classy Chantelle Cameron becomes two-weight world champion

Britain’s Chantelle Cameron produced a dominant performance to defeat Michaela Kotaskova by unanimous decision and capture the vacant WBO light-middleweight world title at the Olympia in London.

The 34-year-old, who fights for three-minute rounds instead of the traditional two minutes in women’s boxing, worked at a high tempo and did her best on the inside.

Two judges scored the contest 99-91 in Cameron’s favor, while the other gave Cameron a score of 100-90.

“It’s a great feeling. I’m returning to my family and winning the world championship,” he said.

“I’ll have to get used to it [three-minute rounds]This is my first time doing this and you need to pace yourself. “I was rushing sometimes and I need to get used to that.”

Cameron vacated her WBC lightweight title in October in protest at her inability to compete under the same rules as male fighters and appeared to relish having an extra minute to work with each round.

The Northampton fighter advanced on his Czech opponent, landing vicious strikes to the head and body.

The previously undefeated Kotaskova bore the damage of Cameron’s relentless work at the end of the fifth round, with blood from her nose and scars under her eyes.

Cameron took his foot off the gas in the second half of the contest but finished with a flourish; He placed 10th and stamped his authority with painful hooks and uppercuts.
