Cameron Young calls tough penalty on himself, immediately gets rewarded by golf gods at Doral

Cameron Young started Sunday’s final round of the Cadillac Championship with a six-shot advantage. Even with a huge lead, a moment of adversity always finds a way into the equation, especially when World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler plays the chaser, but Young’s Sunday fight was as unique as they come.

With the favored lies in effect for the final round after more than an inch of rain Sunday morning, Young picked up the golf ball from the fairway on the second hole of the Par 4 and then put it in the appropriate spot.

As he retrieved his iron to make his approach shot, he paused and walked away, thinking the golf ball was moving very little.

After a rules official arrived on the scene, Young continued to explain that his club was set up behind the golf ball when it rolled forward. The gray area was whether Young’s movement caused the ball to move or whether gravity took over.

The rules official wasted no time in telling Young that he could return the ball to where it was and that he would be assessed a one-shot penalty. The American did not appeal the decision and a zoomed-in replay of the incident shows golf ball movement after he pulled his club back.

Given Young was five shots ahead at the time, this probably made the decision a lot easier to accept, but it’s fair to assume that had things been tighter on the leaderboard the conversation with the rules officials would have been a bit more in-depth.

As is often the case, the golf gods were quick to smile on Young for being honest and actually asking for a penalty.

After hitting his approach shot (his third) to just shy of 14 feet, he drained the par putt. He made his first birdie of the afternoon on the third hole, increasing his lead over Scheffler to six shots.

After shooting an opening round of 64, he kept his foot on the gas with rounds of 67-70 to get into the final 18 holes on Sunday. Young is looking for his second victory of the 2026 PGA Tour season after winning The Players in March.
