Canada issues warning to travelers to use high degree of caution in Morocco

One of America’s neighbors is warning travelers about safety risks at a North African destination and highlighting red flags for U.S. citizens, too.
Morocco, known for its historic cities, bustling markets and ancient sites, is the subject of the Canadian Government’s updated travel advisory.
The country attracts tourists from around the world to the souks of Marrakesh and the Medina, camel rides in the Sahara Desert, historic cities like Fez and coastal destinations like Essaouira – but new warnings highlight potential risks.

Canadian officials on Tuesday urged travelers to exercise a high degree of caution in an updated advisory.
The statement warns of petty thefts, armed robberies and credit and debit card fraud, as well as “terrorism and attacks targeting foreigners.”

The travel warning also urges travelers to avoid areas near the Algerian-Morocco border “due to the increased military presence, unstable security situation, and difficulty in locating the exact border.”

The warning is not limited to remote areas.
“Always maintain a high level of caution.”
The statement also states that the demonstrations, which usually take place near government buildings in major cities such as Rabat and Casablanca, “could turn violent at any time.”

“They can also cause disruptions to traffic and public transport.”
Canada’s advice is largely in line with that of the U.S. State Department, which lists Morocco as a Tier 2 destination and urges travelers to exercise greater caution.

This week’s warning also warned of a “kidnapping threat to Westerners” in Morocco, particularly in remote areas and areas bordering Algeria and Mauritania.

“Always maintain a high level of caution when traveling, especially in the southern and border areas of Morocco,” the advisory notes. “Do not hike alone in remote mountain areas.”

Earlier this month, U.S. officials issued an advisory for Albania, a budget-friendly destination on the Adriatic coast, citing tensions with Iran.
