130th Constitutional Amendment Bill a move to “weaken democracy”: BSP chief Mayawati

On Thursday, August 21, 2025, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Supremo Mayayawati called the 130th Constitutional Amendment Draft as a movement for “weakening democracy” and called on the union government to re -evaluate the legislation.
“The 130th Constitutional Amendment Law brought by the Central Government yesterday (20 August 2025) in the Parliament in the Parliament in the midst of a great turmoil seems to be something that weakens democracy in the current political climate.”

“The ruling parties often fear that they will abuse it for their own gains, selfishness and hostility. Therefore, our party never accepts this bill. It will be appropriate for the government to rethink the country’s democracy and constitution.”
Trade Union Interior Minister Amit Shah carried the bill in Lok Sabha, which aims to allow the prime minister, chief ministers and other ministers to be abolished if they were arrested for serious charges on Wednesday, August 20, 2025 for 30 days.

The bill faced violent protests from the opposition members who described it as “against the spirit of the Constitution and Federalism”.
In his short reaction to the criticism of the opposition for the bills, Mr. Shah fought for a stance for moral values in public life and said, “We are not ashamed to continue to occupy constitutional positions while encountering serious accusations.”
