Canary Islands hotel breaks silence as British dad dies after eating ‘half-cooked’ chicken | World | News

The Canary Islands Facility, where an British holidaymaker died after eating “semi -cooked” chicken, spoke for the first time following an investigation into the man’s death. Barcelo Hotel Group, which runs Occidential Jandia Playa, stressed the “Solid Food Hygiene and Security Problem” while capturing the opportunity to express “deep regrets”.
Greater Manchester, Bolton, Little Lver, 70 -year -old Leslie Green, celebrated her birthday at the four -star Occidiantal Jandia Playa Hotel in Fuerteventura, where her wife Julie became ill. A retired Manchester evening news delivery driver, his grandfather, after serious diarrhea and dehydration was taken to hospital in the second week of their journeys.
He developed sepsis and kidney failure before he died on 4 November 2024 – first four weeks later.
An investigation at the Rochdale Coroner Court heard that he had died of very organ failure as a result of sepsis triggered by partially cooked chicken eaten in the hotel buffet. Julie Green, who celebrated her birthday on the same journey, was taken to hospital with the same infection for a week, but survived.
Speaking after the hearing, Mrs Green described her husband as a “loving and loving man man and said that his death would serve as a warning to improve food hygiene for other holidaymakers.
Now, Barcelo Hotel Group, which runs Occidential Jandia Playa, has released its first public statement since the tragedy and said, “deeply regretting the death of Mr. Green.
A spokesman said: “Barceló Hotel Group has a deep regret in our Fuerteventura hotel in November 2024.
“On behalf of the whole group, we want to extend our deepest condolences to the guest family and loved ones and to repeat our determination to the safety and prosperity of our customers.
“Barceló Hotel Group has a solid food hygiene and security protocol containing periodic external controls performed by a recognized independent company in meticulous internal controls and food safety. This control system guarantees valid regulations and compliance with our company’s strict quality standards.
He said: “In addition, in the last twelve months, we are organizing certificates from the above -mentioned external audit company that confirms that no salmonella has been identified in the hotel. These inspections and controls reflect our commitment to the health and safety of the guests.”
During the investigation, Ms. Green said that her chicken was cooked during an open buffet meal and remembered a warm -served carbonara sauce.
On October 12, 2024, Mr. Green asked for medical aid when a reorganized doctor sent him to a local clinic for liquids. His condition worsened and was taken to hospital the next day.
The doctors then placed him in a warned coma, but his health continued to deteriorate. In the same year, on November 4, health officials were closed after saying that there was nothing else to do.
A week later, he was sent back to England.
Jennifer Hodgson, who represents Mrs. Green, said after the hearing: “What is for Leslie is the effect of Salmonella and why and other gastric diseases should never be underestimated.
“Julie and his family can not compensate for the ordeal of his family, but it is now very important to learn to develop hygiene for other holidaymakers in the future.”
Ms. Green added: “It was difficult to listen to the evidence, but it was something I had to do to honor Leslie’s memory. I hope I can prevent others as Leslie did.
Occidental Jandia Playa continues to be a popular facility for the UK tourists who visit Canary Islands with its coastal place, multiple pool and open buffet restaurant.
Despite the insistence that the hotel’s inspections had not shown any salmonella last year, Mr. Green’s family says that his case will provide more strict supervision of food safety in the worldwide holiday resorts.
