Canberra prison volleyball game ends in inmate’s ear being bitten off

A prison volleyball match in Canberra returned to violence when one prisoner was removed from the ear of another prisoner and gave him extra time behind the bars.
33 -year -old Benjamin John Wickes was found guilty of causing severe physical damage and strangling his prisoner after the end of the volleyball game at the Supreme Court of Law.
The incident occurred on June 25 at the Canberra’s only correction center Alexander Maconochie Center.
The two prisoners were playing volleyball on the other sides with several other prisoners when they exchanged words at the end of the game.
Wickes went under the net and approached other prisoners before punching and falling to the ground.
Just Justice Verity Verity McWilliam said, “(Bored) bite with enough power to bite a piece of the victim… Then he spit the part of the victim’s ear bites,” Justice Verity McWilliam said.
The court told the court that Wickes continued to shoot the victim, took his eyes with his fingers, then put him in a shit, so he could breathe when he tried to get up.
Justice McWilliam said that there was an opportunistic attack rather than in advance, but there was a high degree of violence, considering that it occurred during a number of sports games.
“The result was violent for the loss of a body part,” he said.
The court was told that Wickes supported a disadvantageous training and to overcome its difficulties, but after the attack, he did not show any regret to his victim.
He was sentenced to one year, five months and five days in prison for six months and 19 days for a non -parole period.
The sentence will be partially presented with its current sentence, that is, on November 19, it will be suitable for conditional evacuation.
