But Bolton reported worsening neck pain on Tuesday and was sent for a CT scan, which revealed two “stable neck fractures.”

Bolton will undergo further imaging and evaluation, with the Australian Olympic Committee working with local doctors for his treatment.

The late replacement option has come into effect and James Johnstone will join the team along with Adam Lambert and Jarryd Hughes for qualifying on Thursday.

It’s a double blow for the Australian team that the Olympics are also over after halfpipe snowboarder Misaki Vaughan failed a head injury assessment (HIA) on Tuesday.

Vaughan hit his head during practice on Monday and showed signs of a head injury. He was removed from training and failed the next HIA on Tuesday, which ruled him out of Olympic competition. Head injury protocols state that an athlete will be unable to compete for at least seven days, meaning she will miss Wednesday’s women’s halfpipe qualifying event.
