Christian Eriksen is conscious after collapsing again on the field while playing for the Denmark national team, the country’s football federation said on Sunday. TV footage showed Erikson, 34, clutching his chest with both hands in the 65th minute of Denmark’s international friendly against Ukraine at Odense’s Nature Energy Park.
In the next TV image shown, Erikson was lying on the ground surrounded by players. The match was later abandoned.
“Christian Eriksen is conscious and doing well under the circumstances,” the Danish football federation wrote on social media.
Eriksen collapsed due to a heart attack during Denmark’s opening group match of the 2021 European Championship against Finland in Copenhagen and underwent lengthy medical treatment before regaining consciousness.
Neither Denmark nor Ukraine qualified for the World Cup.
In the announcement made by the club late on Wednesday, it was announced that Eriksen was transferred to German Bundesliga club Wolfsburg on a free transfer until 2027. Eriksen had been a free agent since his contract with Manchester United expired in the summer. Wolfsburg became Eriksen’s third club since suffering a heart attack during Denmark’s match against Finland in 2021.
Although he made a comeback after being fitted with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD), he was forced to leave his then-club Inter Milan because Italian regulations prevented athletes from competing with ICDs.
After a hugely successful six-month spell at Brentford, Eriksen joined United in 2022.
Although initially successful, he gradually fell out of favor, first under Erik ten Hag and then Ruben Amorim, and left the club at the end of last season.
Eriksen, who also played for Tottenham and Ajax earlier in his career, played 144 times for Denmark and scored 46 goals.
Eriksen becomes the sixth Danish member of the Wolfsburg squad, joining Joakim Maehle, Jesper Lindstrom, Andreas Skov Olsen, Jonas Wind and Adam Daghim.
