Cartwright injured as Aussies start hot at Perth Sevens

“That’s the hard part about our game; it’s a full-contact sport.

“Carty is amazing. He’s an incredible person.”

“I want to give a note to his family; his grandmother passed away last week.

“Carty is going through some trouble right now and I just wanted to send my love to their family.”

Australia adapted nicely to the 35-degree conditions and the home side broke New Zealand’s spirits with the first two tries of the second half to take a 21-7 lead.

“We are the fittest team here,” Turner said.

“We may not be the biggest, but when it gets to 10 to 12 minutes (of a 14-minute game), we start to come back and really start to put the tempo on teams.

“We were persistent, completed a few good tries and defended well.”

The win against Great Britain was exciting.

With Australia leading 19-0, Great Britain scored three quick tries to take a 21-19 lead.

However, after the final siren, Australia came out on top when Hadley Tonga scored an acrobatic try in the corner.

“It feels great,” Tonga said.

“All the guys trust me and my speed, so I was very grateful to score on the corner.”

Australia’s final win meant New Zealand beat Great Britain to advance to the semi-finals.

The Australian women opened their account by defeating Great Britain in eight tries, with Heidi Dennis scoring a hat-trick.

It was the perfect way to bounce back from the 36-7 thrashing of Australia by New Zealand in the Singapore Sevens final last Sunday.

The always prolific Maddison Levi scored a winner against Great Britain, a brace in the France victory and two more tries in their final group match against Canada.
