NatWest has planned the permanent closure of six of its branches next week. The anticipated closures have resulted in mass closures of high street banks throughout the year, with more than 100 branches set to cease operating by the end of 2025.
The decision to close branches across the country was driven by a shift in consumer habits, with more and more people switching to online banking and digital services.
The bank announced that more than 80 percent of its customers use digital banking methods and most new accounts are opened online. So NatWest’s response to the “industry-wide change” was to review its entire network and cancel the number of branches it operated.
NatWest has assessed customers who have chosen in-branch banking and said it will continue to support those who may need additional support when their local branch closes.
The bank said: “We recognize that some people, particularly our vulnerable customers, still need help to adapt. Our customer support experts proactively contact branch users who we know may need additional support when a branch closes, and where needed, we set up community pop-ups to help customers become familiar with alternative banking services.”
Alternative in-branch banking tools such as Community Pop-ups and Mobile Branches are being launched to assist those who have difficulty using online services.
Banking Centers are also available, allowing customers to use basic services such as deposits and withdrawals, balance inquiries and bill payments.
