Jesy Nelson calls plan to test newborns for deadly muscle condition SMA a ‘victory’

The test uses a heel prick blood sample taken shortly after birth.

Nelson said: “After years of campaigning, this means a lot.

“Today is a day of hope. Knowing that families of the future will have access to early diagnosis and the opportunity to achieve the best possible outcomes is something I am incredibly proud to support.

“This is a victory for every family affected by SMA. Although it cannot change our children’s future, I know this is the beginning of a brighter future for future SMA families.”

Hundreds of thousands of babies are expected to be screened for SMA within the scope of the study to be carried out under the leadership of scientists from Oxford University.

This will help the UK National Screening Committee make the final decision on whether SMA testing should become permanent practice.

Health Secretary James Murray said he was “admired” by campaigners working to raise awareness of SMA.

“No parent should have to watch their child lose the ability to move or breathe, knowing that earlier treatment can make a big difference,” Murray said.
