Caught On Camera: New Videos Show Scale Of 8.7 Magnitude Quake In Russia’s Kamchatka | WATCH | World News
A large 8.7 earthquake hit Russia’s Far Kamchatka Peninsula on Wednesday, July 30, 2025 and caused a widespread Pacific Ocean tsunami warning. Although the first assessment of the US Geology Research (USGS) estimated the earthquake as 8.0, it was later raised and confirmed one of the largest earthquakes to hit the region in decades.
The powerful earthquake hit 19.3 km (12 miles) at a shallow depth and approximately 125 km (80 miles) of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky in the Gulf of Avacha took place.
Dramatic videos surface
Within a few minutes, dramatic videos appeared on social media websites claiming to have caught the magnitude of the earthquake. The interior videos showed false movements with furniture swing and trembling buildings. Apparently an supervision video from a mobile shop showed the items falling from the shelves as the earthquake was hit. Another clip caught the moment when the seismic center in Russia had identified the earthquake and released alarms. While the first reports show no loss from direct tremors, the damage to buildings, including a kindergarten, was reported.

Kamchatka Governor Vladimir Soloudov said in a video published in Telegram that the event was “serious and strongest in tremors that last for decades.”
Pacific Tsunami Warnings
The earthquake immediately led to tsunami warnings and recommendations in the Pacific. The US tsunami warning system has released a Tsunami Consultancy for regions such as Alaska and an hour for the US Island region of the GUAM and other Micronesia Islands.

Japan’s Meteorological Agency (JMA) increased the tsunami warning and warned that three meters (9.8 feet) waves were predicted along the Pacific coast of Japan. The waves were expected to strike between 10:00 and 11:30 am (0100-0230 GMT) in the morning. Russian authorities confirmed that a 32 cm (1 fit) tsunami wave could hit the Kamchatka coast. On the other hand, Severo-Kurilsk, a town in the south of the peninsula, confirmed that the first waves fell and that the evacuation was ordered by Sakhalin Governor Valery Limarenko. Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky reports were chaos among the people who evacuated the streets, power and mobile phone cuts.

Kamchatka and Russia are located in the Far East, a very active Pacific Fire Ring, a famous area for frequent and intense earthquakes and volcanic activity. In the early July, the region swung with five powerful earthquakes, the most powerful 7.4 magnitude.
