CBP dog finds 100 lbs of meat and wildlife products from Thailand

A Customs and Border Protection agricultural detector helped discover nearly 100 pounds of banned meat, plants and wildlife products in luggage arriving from Thailand after alerting officers to the luggage, officials said.
CBP said K9 Maisy alerted officers to the bag containing 50 pounds of meat, including raw meat, 33 pounds of mangoes, garlic, bamboo, banana plants and approximately 16 pounds of Bengal monitor lizards. The US Fish and Wildlife Service detained the monitor lizard.
“Wouldn’t you be so happy if you found all this in a suitcase?” CBP wrote alongside a photo of Maisy posing in the back of the unusual transport.

CBP agricultural experts regularly inspect international baggage for prohibited meat, plants and wildlife products that could introduce harmful insects, animal diseases or invasive species into the United States.
In a separate case, the California Fish and Wildlife Service said officers working with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration inspected a vehicle at the San Ysidro Port of Entry and found approximately 436 fish, including rockfish, lingcod, sheepshead and yellowtail.

CDFW said The three people in the vehicle did not have valid Mexican fishing licenses, and officers determined they were bringing the fish into the United States to sell.

The catch was seized as evidence and charges are being pursued in connection with allegations of illegal fishing in Mexico, fishing without valid licenses and illegal importation of fish into the United States, the agency said.
