CBS anchor Tony Dokoupil urges accountability amid media trust crisis

“CBS Evening News” anchor Tony Dokoupil urged viewers to hold him accountable Thursday after acknowledging that many Americans distrust legacy media.
Ahead of Dokoupil’s first hosting night on Monday, CBS News released A clip of Dokoupil acknowledging that he’s heard people stop trusting the media because of their inability to properly discuss certain stories, like Russiagate, Hunter Biden’s laptop, and COVID quarantines.
“The thing is, in a lot of stories, the press missed the story,” Dokoupil said. he said. “Because we took into account the perspective of advocates, not the average American. Or we give too much weight to the analysis of academics or elites and not enough weight to you.”

He added that he felt the same way and promised that as the new anchor of the “CBS Evening News,” he would put viewers’ interests ahead of politicians, advertisers and “the corporate owners of CBS.”
“I report for you, which means I tell you what I know, when I know it and how I know it. And I’ll tell you when I get it wrong. That also means I will talk to everyone and hold everyone in public life to the same standard. After all, I became a journalist to talk to people. I love talking to people about what worked and what didn’t in this country, and not just what needs to change, but also good ideas that should never change. I think telling the truth means telling them,” Dokoupil said.

CBS News executive editor Bari Weiss announced in December that Dokoupil would replace current co-hosts John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois.

“We live in a time when many people have lost trust in the media. Tony Dokoupil is the person who will regain that trust,” CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss said in a press release. he said. “That’s because he believes in the values of old-school journalism: asking the tough questions, following the facts wherever they lead, and holding power accountable. Justice-hungry Americans will see that on screen every night.”
Dokoupil will be the fourth anchor to lead the “CBS Evening News” since 2019 and was reportedly hand-picked by Weiss, one of his most significant moves as CBS’ new president.
