CBSE on Two Board Exams Policy

New Delhi: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced that it is mandatory for Class 10 students to appear for the first board exam and those who do not attempt at least three subjects in the first edition will be placed in the “basic repetition” category, officials said. CBSE starts with two board exams for Class 10 from 2026.

The statement made by the board came after several requests stating that due to some reasons, Class 10 students could not appear for the first board exam, hence they should be allowed to appear for the second board exam.

“It is mandatory for all students to appear for the first board examination. All successful and eligible students will be allowed to improve their performance in any of the three subjects except Science, Mathematics, Social, Science and languages,” CBSE Controller of Examinations Sanyam Bhardwaj said.

“If a student cannot take the first exam in three or more subjects, he will not be allowed to take the second exam. Such students will be placed in the ‘Compulsory Repetition’ category and will be able to take the exam only next year in the main exams to be held in February next year.”
