Census should be initiated in Telangana after including 40 more castes in OBC list: Commission for Backward Classes

Telangana Backward Classes Commission wants 40 more castes to be included in Central OBC list
Telangana Backward Classes Commission has urged Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao to take necessary steps to include 40 more Backward Castes in the state in the Central Other Backward Classes (OBC) list. Commission Chairman G. Niranjan said that Census 2027 in the State should be started only after castes are included in the list.
Home Listing Operations (HLO) in the state are scheduled to begin from May 11. This will be the first fully digital application. 15 days before the HLO, citizens will be given the option to voluntarily enter the data through a platform.
According to a press note published on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, “130 castes have been recognized as Backward Classes in Telangana State. However, the Central Government has included only 90 castes in the OBC list and has not included 40 castes. As a result, there is a possibility that the number of BCs in Telangana may be recorded lower than the actual figure.”
The State Government and BC Commission had earlier requested the Center to add 40 castes to the OBC list. However, according to the press note, no decision has been made so far.
