Central Railway services hit as fire beaks out in train filled with garbage in Mumbai’s Kurla

According to the information provided by CR officials, the first car of the train, where garbage and dirt collected from the rails and railway lines were collected, burst into flames at around 20.30. Here are more details about it.

The incident took place near Kurla railway station in Mumbai.

Train services on the main line of the Central Railway (CR) were disrupted on Thursday evening, January 8, after a train carriage filled with mud and garbage caught fire. The incident took place near Kurla railway station in Mumbai and the train was reportedly stuck on the siding. According to the information provided by CR officials, the first carriage of the train, where garbage and dirt collected from the rails and railway lines were stored, burst into flames at around 20.30. The train was parked between Kurla and Vidyavihar railway stations.

Fire crews were immediately dispatched to the scene to control the fire. According to Hindustan Times, a CR official said: “This filthy private coach, which caught fire, was standing on the EMU side in Kurla. We immediately started taking all necessary measures to extinguish the fire.” Authorities had to briefly shut down the overhead cable (OHE) that supplies 25,000 volts of electricity to the trains to extinguish the fire, causing disruptions to services. According to the report, an official said, “We had to temporarily suspend rail traffic on the UP Slow (towards CSMT) line until the firefighting was completed. The fire was extinguished at 8.55pm and OHE was re-established shortly thereafter to enable train services to resume.” he said.

Authorities also said that the cause of the fire is not yet known and the investigation is ongoing. Earlier in the day, a fire broke out at Tuni railway station in Andhra Pradesh’s Kakinada district.
