Jacinta Nampijinpa Price gave a tearful speech in the Senate as Parliament commemorated the life of Little Baby Kumanjayi.
The Liberal senator is the aunt of the five-year-old boy allegedly murdered by Jefferson Lewis in Alice Springs last month. He called on the government to do more to protect Indigenous children living in township camps similar to the township camps where Little Baby Kumanjayi was allegedly kidnapped.
“My nephew’s life was taken senselessly, selfishly and horribly. And the saddest truth is that none of this came as a surprise to many in my hometown,” Price told the Senate.
“For too long, in this country, in too many communities, there has been a silence about what is happening—a silence driven by fear of causing attack, fear of being labeled a racist, fear of speaking honestly about dysfunction, violence, alcohol abuse, neglect, and the conditions in which vulnerable children are growing up. This silence is killing our babies.”
