Chandigarh grenade blast case solved, claims Punjab DGP

Further investigation is ongoing to establish back and forth links in the case
Punjab police on Saturday (April 4, 2026) claimed that the intelligence wing of the State, in a joint operation with the Chandigarh police, successfully solved the case of a grenade attack outside the office of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Chandigarh with the arrest of five accused involved in the incident.
Police said they seized a hand grenade and a (point) .30 caliber Zigana pistol along with the ammunition they had.

Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said the arrested have been identified as Balwinder Lal alias Shami of Majari village, Jasvir Singh alias Jassi of Bharapur village and Charanjit Singh alias Channi of Sujawalpur village in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar district, also Mandeep alias Abhijot Sharma of Dhuri village in Punjab’s Sangrur district. Rubal Chauhan from Thana village in Himachal Pradesh’s Shimla district.
Mr. Yadav said preliminary investigations revealed that the module was backed by Pakistan’s ISI and operated under the instructions of foreign-born executives based in Portugal and Germany. He said the defendants were part of a structured network that included multiple interrupts and submodules to carry out the attack.
The DGP said that two key perpetrators of the attack have also been identified. Further investigation is ongoing to establish forward and reverse links in this case, the official added.
On April 1, a grenade attack took place outside the BJP office in Sector 37 in Chandigarh. A case was registered under section 25(1)(B) of the Arms Act and section 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar city in Mohali district of Punjab.
