Bondi Beach Terror Attack: 12 Dead Including Gunman, 29 Injured – What We Know So Far | World News

A horrific shooting took place at Bondi Beach in Sydney on Sunday, during celebrations marking the start of Hanukkah, killing 12 people, including the gunman.

The attack occurred close to the “Hanukkah by the Sea” celebration, where Sydney’s Jewish community had gathered to celebrate the festival’s opening night. Videos that emerged later showed at least two men in dark clothing opening fire with what appeared to be rifles from the pedestrian overpass connecting Campbell Parade to Bondi Pavilion.

Hanukkah is an eight-day festival of lights in Judaism, celebrated to commemorate the victory of the Maccabees over their oppressors and the eight-day miracle of oil in the Temple. The attack occurred close to the “Hanukkah by the Sea” celebration, where Sydney’s Jewish community had gathered to celebrate the festival’s opening night.

Victim Identity: Rabbi Eli Schlanger

One of the victims, Rabbi Eli Schlanger, served as assistant rabbi at Bondi Chabad. He is remembered as a devoted husband and father who was actively involved in the local Jewish community and leaves behind a wife and four children.


Police Intervention and Suspects

While the police shot one of the attackers at the scene, the other was caught and it was learned that his condition was serious. Reports in the Australian press state that one of the armed suspects is Naveed Akram, a 24-year-old bricklayer of Pakistani origin living in Sydney who recently lost his job.

Civilian Hero: Ahmed Al Ahmed

A civilian bravely confronted one of the attackers. Ahmed Al Ahmed, a 43-year-old fruit shop owner and father of two, wrestled away from a gunman with a rifle despite having no previous experience with firearms. The man, who was shot twice in the arm, is currently in stable condition and is expected to undergo surgery.


PM Modi Condemns Terror Attack on Bondi Beach

Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly condemned the horrific terrorist attack at Australia’s Bondi Beach and expressed his condolences to the families of the victims.
