Chaos as thousands of migrants storm border into Spanish territory – police ‘overwhelmed’ | World | News

Thousands of migrants flocked to Spain’s north African enclave of Ceuta as police came under pressure from the incoming crowd. Calls from authorities in Ceuta to declare a national emergency were rejected by authorities in Madrid, and calls to send in the army were also rejected.

The small coastal region is located at the northern tip of Morocco, where the Strait of Gibraltar and the Alboran Sea meet in the Mediterranean. Crowds of people were seen celebrating their arrival by walking around the jetties and on the roads at Tarajal beach.

Most of the 1,500 migrants who swam to the area last week are believed to be Moroccan.
