Respecting elders is a big deal in South Africa, and because his father was drunk, “he got drunk. Like: ‘Why didn’t you stop? Who do you think you are?’ like.”
The “Mad Max: Fury Road” actor recalled that he knew his father was angry at him and asked his mother to tell him he was asleep to avoid confronting him when they got home.
“I went into my room, turned off the lights and got scared,” she said. “My window overlooked the driveway and I could tell his level of anger, frustration or unhappiness by the way he walked in. I can’t explain to you the way he walked into that property that night. I just knew something bad was going to happen.”
Theron’s instinct proved correct, and she said her father later “entered the house shooting.”[ing] through the steel doors to get in with his brother.”

Both Theron and her mother “knew the situation was serious” and took action.
“When he first broke the door, my mother ran to the safe to get her gun. She came to my bedroom. We were both holding the door with our bodies because there was no lock on it,” he explained. “And he pulled back and started shooting through the door. That’s the crazy part: We didn’t get a single bullet. It’s crazy when you think about it that way.”
“But the message was very clear. I’m going to kill you tonight. You think I can’t get through this door? Watch me,” he continued. “He walked up to the safe and my mother opened the door while my brother was still standing there. My brother ran down the hall and fired a bullet that ricocheted down the hall seven times and shot him in the hand. That’s something you can’t explain. Then he followed my father, who was then opening the safe to get more guns, and shot him.”
