Charlize Theron says her kids won’t get a free ride and ‘they need to earn it’

Charlize Theron makes it clear that her children will not grow up with the Hollywood safety net.
During a candid conversation, the Oscar-winning actress shared her approach to parenting, explaining that she plans to instill independence and a strong work ethic in her daughters from an early age.
“First of all, your first car is going to be a Datsun because you’re going to crash it,” Theron said bluntly on the “Therapuss with Jake Shane” podcast. “You’re going to fix this somehow. You’re a new driver. So we’re not going to be like the nice car up front. We need some experience and we’ll deserve it.”

Theron emphasized that financial independence for her children is a non-negotiable.
“It’s too early to tell where they’re going to end up… they just need to find a job that pays them because I don’t want to support them for the rest of their lives,” he said.
When asked if her daughters would work in the summer, she did not hesitate.

“Yes. Every time we go to Starbucks, they say, ‘Look at him… See how friendly he is? You must be this friendly every morning at 6 a.m., you should start getting ready for this.’

The actress, who adopted her 12-year-old daughter Jackson in 2012 and on August 9, 2015, has long been open-minded about raising her children as a single mother, stating that this decision was extremely deliberate.
In a July 2025 interview with Alex Cooper on the popular podcast “Call Her Daddy,” Theron called her choice “one of the healthiest decisions I’ve ever made.”

“There’s always something wrong with women. She can’t keep a man, and that’s never part of the discussion like, ‘Wow. She’s really living her truth,'” she said.
Theron did not hold back as she described the freedom she found in motherhood on her own terms.

“I look at them and say, ‘Do you know how wonderful it is to live exactly the way I want to live, to experience motherhood exactly the way I want?'”
He added that he “liked”[s] She stated that she felt like she had “broken the cycle” by saying “I don’t have to have a man run everything” or deal with the challenges of co-parenting.
