ChatGPT loses traffic share as Google’s Gemini, xAI’s Grok gain ground: New report reveals changing AI landscape
The AI landscape is reportedly witnessing a sea change, with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, once the clear leader in the space, showing signs of losing its dominance in the market, according to a report by . similarweb, a website traffic monitoring platform.
The data in the report indicates that rival artificial intelligence platforms such as Google’s Gemini and xAI’s Grok are gaining increasing attention, changing user preferences and intensifying competition in the rapidly developing artificial intelligence market.
What does the report say?
Just a year ago, ChatGPT held 87.2% of all website traffic, far outpacing its competitors. At the time, Google’s Gemini claimed only 5.4% of the audience.
The remaining companies, including platforms like Perplexity, Claud and Copilot, collectively hold about 5% of the traffic share, according to the report.
But by the middle of the year, the story began to change. ChatGPT’s share dropped below 80% for the first time as more users began exploring other options.
Interestingly, during this period also, DeepSeek rapidly gained over 5% traffic share while Gemini began a steady rise towards double digits.
In January of this year, DeepSeek released a low-cost, open-source AI model that costs a fraction of the cost of OpenAI’s o1 and other large language models used to train AI. The launch shook up US tech stocks and global equity markets, sending the value of chip maker Nvidia down to $593 billion overnight.
Shortly before that, Grok was launched in November 2023 as an alternative to existing chatbots. Grok’s arrival also added a new layer of competition.
What is the current scenario?
Today the data shows a completely different sector. While ChatGPT remains the market leader, its traffic share reportedly fell below the 70% mark and settled at 68% as of December 5.
Gemini comes in second and currently has a 20% share of the audience. Grok, meanwhile, continues to gain momentum, nearly tripling its presence in just six months. Similarweb report.
Latest developments in chatbots
The AI race continues to heat up as new players enter the market and existing platforms rapidly upgrade their offerings.
Just last month, xAI, led by Elon Musk, released its new Grok 4.1 model for all its users, claiming that the new model is exceptionally capable of creative, emotional and collaborative interactions, and is more receptive to subtle intent, engaging in conversation and consistent in personality.
At the same time, ChatGPT also released new GPT 5.1 models, offering users two upgraded versions: GPT-5.1 Instant and GPT-5.1 Thinking. According to OpenAI, these models are designed to make it easier for the user to personalize their ChatGPT experience by setting the tone and style of the AI.
Another development in chatbots was seen in Gemini with the Nano Banana feature, which took the internet by storm and emerged as an unexpected viral trend on the internet.
