Cheyenne to host massive AI data center using more electricity than all Wyoming homes combined

Cheyenne, Wyo. (AP) – According to the mayor of the city, an artificial intelligence data center that will use more electricity than any house in Wyoming will be combined before expanding up to five times.

Mayor Patrick Collins said on Monday, “This is a game exchange. Very big.”

The capital of Wyoming, which has a cheap electricity from a condition that produces good-and best energy to keep the knowledgeable temperatures low, has become a center of calculation power.

The city has been home to Microsoft data centers since 2012. Facebook’s parent company meta platforms announced last year a data center of $ 800 million is approaching completion.

According to a joint company statement, the latest data center, which is a common effort between Regional Energy Infrastructure Company Tallgrass and AI data center developer Crusoe, will start with 1.8 Gigawatt electricity and can be scaled to 10 Gigawatt.

A Gigawatt can give about 1 million houses. But this is wyoming’s more house than people. The minimum population Wyoming has about 590,000 people.

And this is a great energy exporter. According to the US Energy Information Administration, Wyoming, the best coal, oil and gas manufacturer, is behind only Texas, New Mexico and Pennsylvania as the best net energy -producing state.

Accounting of fossil fuels generates about 12 times more energy than it consumes Wyoming. According to the EIA, the state exports almost three -fifth of the electricity it produces.

However, this proposed data center is very large, according to Collins and company officials, it will have its own special energy from gas production and renewable sources.

Government Mark Gordon praised the value of the project to the state’s gas industry.

“This is an exciting news for Wyoming and Wyoming Natural Gas Manufacturers, Gordon said Gordon.

Although data centers are energy hungry, experts say that companies can help to reduce their effects on climate by strengthening with renewable energy rather than fossil fuels. Still, electricity can see customers Their invoices increase Auxiliary Programs Plan for Large Data Projects on Grid.

The data center would be built several miles (kilometers) south of Cheyenne near the Colorado state line. The state and local regulators would have to sign in the project, but Collins optimistic construction could soon begin.

“I believe that your plans need to go earlier, not later.” Collins said. He said.

Chat GPT’s developer Openai Rub the USA. For a large AI data center effort, Stargate refused to tell you if the Cheyenne project, a Crusoe spokesman, is one.

“We are not at a stage where we are ready to announce our tenant there,” said Andrew Schmitt. “I can’t confirm or deny that it will be one of Stargate.”

Recently, Openai announced that it has opened the first stage of a data center complex made by Crusoe in Abilene, Texas, in collaboration with the software giant Oracle.

Openai’s global work officer Chris Lehane told Associated Press last week, “As far as we know, the biggest data center – we think of it as a campus – in the world.” “It produces a Gigawatt Energy, depending on roughly and how you count.”

Openai is looking for another part of the United States to expand data centers. Last week, Oracle said he made an agreement with 4.5 Gigawatt data center capacity.

“Now, we are in a position where we can actually build five Gigawatt energy, which we can build in a really concrete way,” Lehane said.

Openai did not choose any place where he plans to create data centers as well as the flagship site in Texas.

Earlier this year, Wyoming was not one of the 16 states that Openai said he was looking for places to create new data centers.

O’Brien reported from Austin, Texas.
