The Chiefs, along with Kansas Governor Laura Kelly and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, announced in a joint statement by team owner and president Clark Hunt that the team will travel to Kansas City, Kansas, following a meeting of the Kansas Legislative Coordinating Council.
“Today, we are excited to take another important step for the future of the series,” Hunt said in his announcement. it said. “We have signed an agreement with Kansas State to host Chiefs football beginning with the 2031 NFL season.

“In the coming years, we look forward to designing and building a state-of-the-art domed stadium and mixed-use district in Wyandotte County and a best-in-class training facility, team headquarters and mixed-use district in Olathe, representing a minimum $4 billion development in Kansas State.”
Kelly added: “This agreement to bring the Chiefs to Kansas takes our state to the next level. With this new stadium, we are creating thousands of jobs, bringing tourists from around the world, attracting youth, and most importantly, continuing to make Kansas the best place to raise a family in America. This is a game changer for Kansas and a signal to America and the world that our state’s future is very bright.”
The Chiefs will remain at Arrowhead Stadium on a lease through the 2030 season. But there will definitely be some bittersweet feelings considering how long the Chiefs have been playing at their current home.

The Chiefs have played at Arrowhead Stadium, which the late Lamar Hunt was instrumental in building in Missouri, since 1972. However, today it is the oldest stadium in the NFL.
But for football fans, the real question remains: Why are the Chiefs making the move?
It’s a debate that’s been going on for some time, but ultimately it revolves around who will be more helpful to the Chiefs in building their future home. Kansas outbid Missouri, and the former state’s STAR (Sales Tax and Revenue) bonds will cover 70% of the cost of the new stadium.
Missouri approved a plan last summer that would pay up to half the cost of new stadiums not only for the Chiefs but also for MLB’s Kansas City Royals.

The Chiefs and Royals share the same field at the Truman Sports Complex, but the baseball organization is looking to make Kauffman Stadium a thing of the past by building its own new home. The royal family was not involved in Monday’s announcement.
Voters in Jackson County, which owns the Truman Sports Complex, blocked an extension of the 3/8-cent sales tax that would have funded improvements to Arrowhead Stadium while helping fund a new Royals stadium. As such, both teams had to look at other options, and the Chiefs made a big move here.
Hunt’s announcement continued: “The benefit to the whole region will be enormous.” “A stadium of this caliber will make Kansas City ready for Super Bowls, Final Fours and other world-class events. A brand new practice facility and headquarters will allow the Chiefs to continue attracting top talent. And the vision for a new mixed-use district will rival any sports-focused development anywhere in the country.”
Taking Hunt’s statement above even further, a domed stadium would make the new Chiefs’ home not only a possible Super Bowl destination, but also host many other sports and cultural events in the future.

Hunt acknowledged how difficult it will be to say goodbye to the city and place his father worked so hard to bring to Missourians and the many others who have supported the Chiefs for decades.
“It will be hard to say goodbye to Arrowhead Stadium in a few years. Like many of you, Arrowhead brings back family memories and unforgettable moments. But the truth is, you are what makes Chiefs game days so special. Seats don’t make noise, concrete doesn’t scare opponents, parking lots don’t barbecue. You do.”
