One child died and another was taken to hospital after a fire broke out in a house in a Kent village.

Firefighters were called to an “intense fire” at the semi-detached property on White Admiral Way in Hamstreet, near Ashford, just after 12:00 GMT.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) said six fire trucks were working hard to extinguish the flames that had spread throughout the house.

“Unfortunately, a child died at the scene,” the statement said.

Ann Millington, KFRS chief executive, said: “Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with everyone affected by this tragic incident, especially the child’s loved ones.

“We understand this will be a challenging time for the local community and support is available from an outreach center set up at Hamstreet Village Hall.”

At the height of the fire, 6 fire trucks were dispatched to the scene.

The investigation into the cause of the fire continues.

Firefighters had previously urged people living nearby or passing through the area to close windows and doors due to smoke, but this advice was later lifted.

In its update at 5:45 p.m., KFRS said it had scaled back the response, with two fire trucks and a crew continuing to put out the fire.

He added that a volunteer response team was on scene offering crew welfare and support.
