World Athletics Championships 2029: UK government backs London bid

In June, more than 100 of England’s most famous athletes called on Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer to return to London’s proposal to host London’s World Athletics Championship.

Despite the allegations that the event would have an economic impact of £ 400 million, it came after concerns that an offer could be at risk.

In a expenditure review last month, the ministers did not refer to the championships when they invested half a billion pounds in sports activities.

However, negotiations with the UK Athletics and the UK Sport were held and Starmer said “happy to support the offer”.

“World Athletics Championships to England to bring the best ability to host unforgettable sports activities to develop our global reputation will be a great national moment of pride,” he said.

“Hosting these championships would not only unlock opportunities for British athletes, but also inspire them to participate in future generations and maintain their ambition.

“The event will provide support for British businesses and support for the UK and bring our communities together.”

British Athletics CEO Jack Buckner said: “After the excellent medal has been withdrawn for the last few years in the world, Olympic and Paralympic Scene, Athletics in the UK, new partners, record participation and stadiums sold. This support sport will take new peaks.”

1500M World Champion and Double Olympic Medal Josh Kerr said: “London 2017 was my first senior world championships and burned fire inside me.

“It was amazing to be a part of a host team in such an atmosphere – being a world champion and chasing the Olympic medals opened me more than ever.

“It would be great for the government to bid for 2029 and to receive support potentially to bring this experience back to London.

“He would inspire so many young athletes and give sports to sports.

“I am proud to support the offer, and we have the chance to show the world what we can do on home territory.”
