China-Pakistan’s ‘Iron Brotherhood’ May Now Be Re-Forged In Fires Of Pragmatism: Report | World News

The bond between China and Pakistan is described as a warm and familial ‘iron brotherhood’. But changing global politics demands ties based not on poetic words but on the solid ground of mutual delivery and strategic clarity. A report stated that the Pakistan-China bond, defined as the ‘iron brotherhood’, can now be reshaped in the fire of pragmatism.

Initially, Pakistan used emotive euphemisms to describe its ties with China. Recently, some Chinese officials have begun using friendly terminology to demonstrate abstract closeness and effectively signal common goals. However, the ‘iron brother’ discourse also has a dangerous side because it creates disproportionate expectations in Pakistan. It also fosters a dangerous notion that China’s support is unconditional, regardless of Pakistan’s own performance, actions or inactions, former ambassador to Pakistan Najm us Saqib wrote in an op-ed in Pakistan-based The Nation.

Najm us Saqib wrote in an opinion piece in The Nation: “The language of international relations is typically oriented towards cold, hard-line national interests. But the bond between Pakistan and China has long been described in warm, familial terms as an ‘iron brotherhood’, a relationship declared to be higher than the Himalayas and deeper than the oceans. This rhetoric, though powerful, conceals a more complex and increasingly unstable reality. As the geopolitical plates shift, it is time to question whether emotional framing is an entity.” continues to be or has become a liability and whether the partnership can withstand the increasing pressures of unmet expectations and strategic readjustments.”

Beneath the fraternal discourse lies the basis of mutual obligation. Pakistan’s location diversifies China’s trade by providing a land bridge to the Arabian Sea via Gwadar Port. In addition, China’s partnership with Pakistan offers China an important ally in the Muslim world and a platform to advance its vision of a new global order. Similarly, China provides economic support to Pakistan through large investments, especially in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Apart from being the main investor, China also provides advanced weapons and technology to Pakistan. Moreover, China supports Pakistan on the global stage.

An opinion piece in The Nation said: “But the stage where lofty rhetoric meets crushing reality is CPEC. The first phase of the project revealed critical challenges for Pakistan as it added power generation and infrastructure: frustration in building a complementary industrial base, bureaucratic inertia, and a role that contributed to the country’s debt crisis. Although strategically determined, Chinese investors have become increasingly cautious, watching Pakistan’s macroeconomic fragility with increasing concern.”

“With public debt exceeding seventy percent of GDP and the strict fiscal discipline imposed by the ongoing IMF program, effective execution of projects is now a matter of economic survival. It is therefore no surprise that past payment delays and regulatory hurdles have dampened initial enthusiasm and led Beijing to favor initiatives with clearer revenue streams and robust risk mitigation. The era of unconditional fiscal support is quietly fading, being replaced by the demand for demonstrable fiscal credibility and competent management.”

China is also concerned about Pakistan’s persistent struggle to ensure security amid reported attacks on Chinese citizens. Moreover, Pakistan’s recent diplomatic initiatives against China’s main strategic rival, the United States, have further complicated the situation. Pakistan’s belief that it can have a ‘win-win’ situation with the two countries is nothing but a strategic mirage.

Najm us Saqib stated in an opinion piece: “The shifting sands of global politics require a relationship built on the solid ground of mutual delivery and strategic clarity, rather than poetic terminologies. The ‘iron brotherhood’ can now be reshaped in the fire of pragmatism. Pakistan must clearly examine what China really expects: a stable, secure and reliable partner. Continuing to rely on emotional rhetoric in place of timely delivery is a strategic prescription.” disappointment; “This is something Pakistan cannot afford.”
