Police probe ‘very serious incident’ at De Montfort University in Leicester as roads around campus are closed

A murder investigation is ongoing after a man is believed to have been stabbed near Leicester city centre.

The incident took place on Oxford Street around 17:00. An 18-year-old man was arrested.

Some roads in the city are still closed after police stormed Oxford Street around 6pm last night.

No further details have been released but following speculation on social media Leicestershire Police said it was ‘not a triple stabbing’.

There is now a large police cordon in the area and officers have launched an ‘urgent investigation’.

De Montfort University said it was offering support to students and staff who witnessed what happened.

East Midlands Ambulance Service said in an update this morning that it had taken one person to hospital in several vehicles and an air ambulance was sent to the scene.

A spokesman for De Montfort said: ‘We are aware of a very serious incident on our campus.

‘We are working with Leicestershire Police as they launch an urgent investigation. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by what happened.

Leicestershire Police confirmed a number of roads were closed, including Oxford Street, Grange Street, Infirmary Square and Carlton Street.

A spokesman for the force said on Wednesday morning that they were unable to confirm any further details of the incident at this time.

A spokesman said: ‘The caller reported a medical emergency. We sent a paramedic in an ambulance car, an ambulance with three crew members and a response officer from the air ambulance were also present.

‘We transferred a patient to Leicester Royal Infirmary.’

A woman walking in the area last night said: BBC: ‘It’s scary because even though I’m not at university at the moment, it’s very close to where you’re staying and it’s sad to know this is happening in your area too.

‘This definitely doesn’t make you feel safe. I hope everyone is okay no matter what.’

Students remain in the dark about what is happening on Oxford Street and many woke this morning to find a police cordon in place.

25-year-old Prince Sandhu told Leicestershire Live: ‘I live in that area and saw a lot of police but I wasn’t there when it happened last night so I don’t know what’s going on.

‘No one I talk to knows either. ‘There seems to be too many police.’

It is understood the incident took place near Leicester Royal Infirmary and patients and staff have been warned of disruption to their journeys.

A spokesperson for the charity said in a Facebook post: ‘There will be traffic disruption in the area this morning due to the closure of roads near the hospital following an incident overnight.

‘Please arrive for your appointment and allow extra time for your journey. Follow local guidance and police orders.

‘If you are delayed, please contact your clinic or department if possible.’

Bus routes in the region were also closed to traffic due to police cordon.

According to operator First Bus, inbound services 88, 88A and 88E follow an adjusted route.
