Molly McNearney Says Trump-Supporting Family ‘Hurts Me So Much’: ‘My Husband Is Out There Fighting This Man’
On the “We Can Do Tough Things” podcast this week, Jimmy Kimmel’s wife and showrunner Molly McNearney said the fight against Donald Trump is personal. McNearney said she has extended family members who support the Trump administration, and “it makes me very sad because of the personal relationship I have right now with my husband out there fighting this man.”
McNearney noted that his immediate family did not vote for Trump in 2024 after previously supporting him in 2016, also reflecting his own history as Republican voters. “I was very upset when Donald Trump was first elected, we all were,” he said. “But I remember thinking I understood this, because I grew up in a very conservative Republican household. I mean, I bought my dad a Rush Limbaugh tie in high school. I voted straight Republican, and that’s what I was told to do.”
Once he left his hometown and “started to understand different things, different needs and different people,” McNearney changed his political leanings.
“And I have some sympathy for the people in my family, people who I feel are being deliberately misinformed every day,” he explained. “They’re deliberately misinformed every day and they believe that. But it makes me very sad because of the personal relationship I have now that my husband is out there fighting this man. And to me, them voting for Trump means they’re not voting for my husband and me and our family. And unfortunately I’ve lost relationships with people in my family because of it.”
McNearney also said the debate wasn’t about politics, but “family values.”
Kimmel was suspended from his role as late-night host in September over comments he made about Charlie Kirk’s death. HE returned to his desk later that month he told his audience: “It was never my intention to make light of the murder of a young man.”
He added of ABC: “They welcomed me back on the air and I thank them for that. Unfortunately, I think it unfairly puts them at risk. The President of the United States has made it clear that he wants to fire me and the hundreds of people who work here from our jobs.”
“Our leader celebrates that Americans are losing their livelihoods because they can’t take a joke. Leaving Colbert from CBS“Then he turned his attention to me and now openly supports NBC firing Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers and hundreds of Americans who work on their shows but don’t make millions of dollars.”
Kimmel hasn’t stopped attacking Trump since his return. The comedian responded to this week’s Election Night results on Wednesday. he told the studio audience“Everything he touched was a loser. Trump hasn’t been this embarrassed since he found out there was a Donald Trump Jr. But don’t worry, don’t be afraid if you’re tired of losing. He has an excuse. Actually, he has two.”
