‘Classic’ of Prince Harry to release a ‘controversial’ article on anti-Semitism right in the middle of Catherine’s first foreign tour in almost four years, fumes RICHARD EDEN

Harry’s decision to write a ‘controversial’ article for the New Statesman the day after the King’s Speech and during Princess Catherine’s two-day tour of Italy is another example of the Duke trying to steal the spotlight from the Royal Family. Richard Eden weighed in on Palace Secrecy.

The Daily Mail’s Daily Editor claimed the timing of the article, titled ‘My Fears for Our Divided Kingdom’, was ‘extraordinary’ and designed to overshadow the work of the King and Princess Catherine.

Writing for the left-wing magazine, the Duke warned of a “deeply disturbing rise in anti-Semitism” in Britain following the recent terrorist attacks in London and Manchester.

He called on the public not to allow anger over the war in Gaza to turn into hostility against Jewish communities within the country; some interpreted the article as a veiled criticism of the state of Israel.

Eden acknowledged the matter was serious but said it was ‘classic’ for the Duke to choose this moment, when the Royal Family is at its busiest for months, to start a new debate.

“I must say the timing is extraordinary,” the royal expert said.

‘What do we have this week? The King’s Speech is a big event and Catherine’s first trip abroad in almost four years, and here she is, writing an article.

‘It’s obvious this was planned. That’s controversial for a left-wing magazine. It was clearly designed to make headlines.

‘I noticed there was no story about Princess Catherine in the Times, no picture of her, but there is a remarkable story about Harry and this article.’

The King, fresh from a successful state visit to the United States, was opening Parliament at a time when pressure was mounting on Sir Keir Starmer’s premiership.

Palace Confidential co-host Richard Kay admitted Harry’s timing screamed: ‘What about me?’

‘I agree that times are extraordinary,’ said the Daily Mail’s Editor-in-Chief.

‘It’s as if Harry were shouting from the back of the room: ‘Hey, what about me!’ ‘I still want to be relevant.’

‘The question is whether anyone is listening. We’ll see.”

‘I totally agree with both Richards about the timing,’ he said.

‘What members of the Royal Family don’t want is for something to overshadow the great work they do.

‘I don’t know who Harry advised him to do something like that. It really needs to be subtle and this didn’t seem very subtle.’
