Huge fire triggers dangerous area declaration in Adelaide

Emergency services are battling a major industrial fire at a block of shops in Adelaide.
The fire broke out on the corner of Regency Rd and South Rd, Croydon Park, sending a large cloud of thick black smoke into the sky.
A Danger Zone declaration has been declared for the area bounded by the North-South Motorway Slide Road, Regency Road, Hudson Ave and Standard Ave in Croydon Park.
SA Police closed adjacent roads, including the South Road exits, and urged all members of the public to stay out of the area due to toxic smoke.

“Regency Road northbound on the North South Highway is closed while emergency services respond to the fire,” South Australian police said in a statement.
Drivers were asked to be careful as dense black smoke negatively affected visibility.
More than 80 firefighters are on the scene, some riding cranes to fight the fire from above.
The smoke, which smelled of plastic and carried ash, was visible from the surrounding suburbs and spread to nearby businesses, including a Dial a Curry restaurant and a solar panel store.

The Metropolitan Fire Brigade warned people in the Croydon Park area to avoid the smoke and said the smoke was moving “in a south-west direction”.
They advised local people to be aware of the health effects of smoke on themselves and others.

Ambulances are also at the scene, but it is not known whether there are any injuries at this time.
Witnesses reported seeing smoke from suburbs, including Gilles Plains.
More to come.
