The team announced Friday they fired special teams coordinator Tom McMahon.

In the statement, Carroll said assistant special teams coordinator Derius Swinton II will take over as special teams coach.
The Raiders’ special teams plagued them in the loss on Thursday and throughout the season. Trailing 10-7 with 4:26 left in the fourth quarter against the Broncos, Daniel Carlson missed the goal that would have ended the game in a draw.
“He needs to kick better,” Carroll said after Thursday’s game. “It’s killing him too. He wants to do every single one of these things and he needs to kick better.”

At the beginning of the season, Carlson had a chance to win the game for the Raiders after trailing 25-24 against the Chicago Bears, but his shot was blocked. Carlson missed a crucial extra point in the Raiders’ 30-29 overtime loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars last week.
McMahon was one of two coordinators that Carroll decided to keep away from the previous regime when he took over. Defensive coordinator Patrick Graham is the other.

The Raiders are no strangers to making coaching changes mid-season. Going back to 2017, they fired either a coach, a coordinator, or a general manager every season except 2019 and 2022.
Thursday’s loss dropped the Raiders to 2-7, and their next game will be against the Dallas Cowboys (3-5-1) on Monday, Nov. 17.
