The government on Sunday, February 1, 2026, increased the limit for passengers bringing duty-free imported goods into India from ₹50,000 to ₹75,000.

Under the Baggage Rules, 2026, notified on Sunday, a resident or tourist of Indian origin arriving in India other than by road will be allowed to be exempt from duty-free items worth up to Rs 75,000 if such items are carried on the passenger’s own person or in bona fide baggage.

The new baggage rules 2026 will come into force from midnight on February 2 and will replace the ten-year-old baggage rule.

A non-infant foreign tourist coming to India will be allowed to clear goods worth up to ₹25,000 duty-free. This limit was ₹15,000 in the 2016 Baggage Rule.

If a resident or tourist of Indian origin resides abroad for more than 1 year, on his return to India, jewelery weighing up to 40 grams will be allowed to be cleared duty-free if brought by a female passenger. If someone other than a female passenger brings good luggage, the limit will be 20 grams.

For the purposes of this Code, jewelery means any ornament, whether studded or not, made of gold, silver, platinum or other similar precious metal, normally worn by a person.
