Commuter chaos after truck hit by Transperth train in Guildford
Five passengers, including two children, were injured when a lorry failed to cross a level crossing and collided with an oncoming train in Guildford just before 4pm.
The incident occurred at the Meadow Street crossing on Wednesday afternoon, causing major concussion to the approximately 100 passengers on board.
The closure was also causing delays on the Airport, Ellenbrook and Fremantle Lines.
A passenger on the train at the time of the collision said that he was “flying” 2 to 3 meters in the air after the collision, and people fell to the ground screaming.
Main Roads WA warned that Meadow Street was closed in both directions on the Great Eastern Highway.
“At around 3.55am police received reports of a train and truck colliding at the Meadow Street railway crossing in Guildford,” a WA Police spokesman said.
“Police, St John WA and DFES are responding.
“There are no life-threatening injuries. The investigation is ongoing.”
The truck was thought to be carrying a bobcat. With the force of the impact, the windshield of the train was broken and debris was scattered on nearby vehicles.
Following the incident, paramedics notified the two young children and their mothers about the situation, while a woman and two young people were taken to separate hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.
Other passengers had to wait an hour before getting off the train.
A Perth Transport Association spokesman said the truck failed to clear the level crossing at Meadow Street and was then hit by a Transperth train.
They said delays were expected on the Midland line.
All trains to Midland stopped at Bassendean.
“Bus replacement services are being organized between Bayswater and Midland, but trains will continue to run between Perth and Bayswater,” they said.
