Congress-led opposition chose obstruction over progress: Union Minister Ram Mohan Naidu on defeat of Constitution Amendment Bill

The Union Minister further stated that opposing the Women’s Reservation Act means denying opportunities to millions of women across the country, adding that the bill is a step towards justice, dignity and rightful representation.

Earlier, Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy on Friday praised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and INC President Mallikarjun Kharge for their leadership in averting “national disaster” after the opposition defeated the Constitution Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha.
In a post on X, Reddy deemed it a historic event and called it “Red Letter Day”. He appreciated the Congress brass uniting all opposition parties for the landmark decision. “Today will forever be remembered as Red Letter Day in the History of India, under the leadership of the Leader of the Opposition Lok Sabha and Shri Mallikarjun @kharge Ji, who united all democratic forces and opposition leaders to avert a national disaster,” he wrote.
He also praised the allied parties and leaders of the INDIA bloc for their opposition to the “black bills”. “I thank the leaders of various allied parties who came together and stood firm under fire to defeat these black laws, including Thiru MK Stalin garu, Mrs Mamata Banerjee Ji, Shri Akhilesh Yadav ji, Shri Sharad Pawar ji, Shri Uddhav Thackeray Ji, Shri Lalu Prasad Yadav ji, Shri Hemant Soren ji, Shri Farooq Abdullah Ji, Shri Naveen Patnaik ji, Shri Arvind Kejriwal ji and Communist among others leaders of the parties,” he added.
This comes as the Constitution Amendment Bill to implement Women’s Reservation in the 2029 general elections was earlier defeated in the Lok Sabha with opposition parties voting against it.
In the division that occurred after the three bills were discussed, 298 members supported the bill, while 230 members voted against the law.
Despite the defeat of the bill, the Women Reservation Act, 2023 remains on the books, but its implementation remains dependent on future census.
