On Thursday, May 8, 2026, the Congress sharpened its attack on the Narendra Modi Government over women’s safety and rising crimes against vulnerable sections; Party president Mallikarjun Kharge claimed that 12 years of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rule has exposed the “void” of the Centre’s claims regarding law and order and women’s safety.
In a post on X, Mr Kharge said the government’s narrative on women’s safety contradicted official data. Citing the 2024 report of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), the Congress leader said crimes against women have increased by 42.6% since 2013. Citing the same data set, he said crimes against children have increased by 204.6%, atrocities against Dalits by 41.3% and crimes against Adivasis by 46.7%.
He said NCRB data shows that cyber crimes have increased by 1,689% and 10,546 farmers, 52,931 daily wage laborers and 14,488 students will die in 2024.
“Twelve years of the Modi Government have exposed the hollowness of its claims regarding law and order and women’s safety,” Mr. Kharge said, adding that the “truth” was now before the country.
These remarks come after NCRB’s 2024 report recorded a rise in cases related to crimes against children and senior citizens in conflict with the law. In 2024, 34 thousand 878 cases were recorded against children, an increase of 11.2 percent compared to the previous year, while crimes against the elderly increased by 16.9 percent to 32 thousand 602.
Separately, All India Mahila Congress president Alka Lamba accused the BJP of using ‘Beti Bachao’ and ‘Nari Vandan’ only as political slogans and failing to ensure justice for women.

Addressing a press conference, Ms. Lamba cited NCRB figures and said that during the tenure of the Modi Government, 42,85,888 cases of crime against women have been recorded between 2014 and 2024.
“These are not just statistics, but more than 42 lakh women and girls fighting for justice,” he said, claiming that annual crimes against women have increased from 3.4 lakh in 2014 to around 4.42 lakh in 2024.
Ms Lamba said the BJP Governments were protecting the accused rather than punishing them and cited cases in Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Bihar to accuse the ruling party of protecting influential leaders.
He demanded that NCRB’s data on crimes against women be discussed during the Monsoon Parliament Session and sought detailed information on the number of victims getting justice and convictions secured under the POCSO Act.
