Constitution, voice of Gandhi, Ambedkar, under attack: Rahul in Raebareli

Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, said that the Constitution is under attack and described it as a document that represents the voices of Dr BR Ambedkar and Mahatma Gandhi, which must be protected.
He was addressing the ‘Bahujan Swabhiman Sabha’ in his parliamentary constituency Raebareli, in memory of revolutionary Veera Pasi, who belonged to the district.
“While listening to other speakers, I felt that we remember Veera Pasi and Dr. Ambedkar, but the ideology they advocate is not being properly protected because an attack on the Constitution is being made before our eyes,” Mr. Gandhi said.
The Congress leader said the Constitution is not an ordinary document but a document that carries the ideology of Ambedkar, Veera Pasi and Mahatma Gandhi along with the contributions of many reformers like Narayana Guru in Kerala and Basavanna in Karnataka.
Mr. Gandhi also mentioned Buddha, Guru Nanak and Kabir, saying their voices were reflected in the Constitution.
He claimed that while people bowed to the statues and organized large programs, they remained silent against the attacks on the Constitution and the ideology it represents.
“Those who bow before Ambedkar’s statue forget his ideology. They do not protect it. The ideology needs to be defended when it is under attack,” he said.
“You applaud now, but you remain silent when the Constitution is torn apart,” Mr. Gandhi said as some in the audience applauded.
“He says India belongs to everyone, not to any caste, individual, billionaire or organisation,” he said.

Mr Gandhi cited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent call to reduce fuel consumption, gold purchases and foreign travel to warn against a sharp rise in prices.
“Inflation will rise rapidly in the coming months. Prices of gasoline, diesel, gas, food grains, everything will increase,” he said.
He criticized Mr Modi for embarking on a five-country tour so soon after appealing to people to avoid traveling abroad.
He also alleged that the Prime Minister was “attacking the Constitution 24 hours a day” by weakening MNREGA, not conducting caste census and favoring selected industrialists.
Mr Gandhi alleged that the interests of big industrialists like Ambani and Adani were being prioritized at the expense of the country.
He said remembering Ambedkar, Veera Pasi and Mahatma Gandhi is meaningful only if their ideology is preserved.
“Holding hands in front of their statues is not enough. If you go out and act against their ideology, it means nothing,” he said.
Mr. Gandhi said India’s ideals of equality and justice must be defended collectively.
“The Veera Pasis, Ambedkars and Gandhis of the 21st century will emerge from among you. They will not come from the sky,” he said.
‘Modi, Shah traitors who sold Hindustan’
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday (May 20, 2026) termed Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and RSS “traitors” who sold out the country’s interests to selected industrialists.
Gandhi said at the rally: “You will have to stand up and fight. When RSS workers come to your homes and talk about Narendra Modi and Amit Shah, you must tell them that their organization Mr Modi and Mr Shah are traitors. They tried to sell out our country and attacked our Constitution, Ambedkarji and Mahatma Gandhi.”
