Continuous rainfall brings Chennai to a standstill, affects Diwali festivities, IMD predicts…

RMC has issued a heavy rain warning for 11 districts in the southern and Western Ghats regions on the occasion of Deepavali. Districts likely to witness heavy rainfall include Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Erode, Theni, Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli, Kanniyakumari and Tenkasi.

Thoothukudi witnessed heavy waterlogging following four days of heavy rains in and around the city.

The Regional Meteorological Center (RMC) has predicted widespread rainfall in Tamil Nadu over the next six days, with some areas expected to experience heavy to very heavy showers between October 23 and 25.

RMC has issued a heavy rain warning for 11 districts in the southern and Western Ghats regions on the occasion of Deepavali. Districts likely to witness heavy rainfall include Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Erode, Theni, Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli, Kanniyakumari and Tenkasi.

Rains are expected to gradually spread to northern and Delta regions, including Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Thanjavur, Nagapattinam and Mayiladuthurai, from October 21, RMC added.

Earlier on Sunday, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin visited the State Emergency Operations Center in Ezhilagam, Chennai, to review the preparedness and precautionary measures taken across the state in view of the formation of northeast monsoon and depression.The Chief Minister held a video conference with the District Collectors of Thiruvarur, Tenkasi, Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, Theni, Coimbatore and District Collectors. An appeal was made to the Nilgiris to assess the situation and review the steps taken to combat possible heavy rains in the coming days.

Chief Secretary N Muruganandam (IAS), Revenue Commissioner and Additional Chief Secretary Dr M Sais Kumar (IAS), Revenue and Disaster Management Department Additional Principal Secretary P Amudha (IAS), Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner J Kumaragurubaran (IAS), Disaster Management Commissioner CG Thomas Vaithiyan (IAS) and other senior government officials are present during the review meeting found.

After the meeting, the Prime Minister told reporters that he had not encountered any major problems or damage in areas that received heavy rainfall so far. He also stated that according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy rainfall is expected on October 21 and 22.
